I really like collecting old patches. However, that doesn't mean I have the funds available to tackle these old pieces. This blog post includes items that sold in the last couple of weeks and the least expensive one sold for over $600+. OUCH However, when you click over on the link and see these patches up close you can begin to see why bidders were fighting hard to land these prized pieces.

Its not often that an auction jumps over $1,00o+ in less than 10 seconds. However, when you have two monster snipes come in on top of each other that is what happens. The #1 selling item had that bidding pattern and was one of the best items that sold recently in the category. The pair of 509th patches sold for almost the exact price but were won by different bidders. The pilot's wings saw 10 bids in the last few hours of the auction including three that too it over $1k.

Its pretty unusual to see an auction take 21 bids to finally reach the reserve and for that to be the exact selling price thanks to a snipe. However, that unlikely scenario describes the theater made 509th patch which was the best patch to sell on WWII eBay over the last couple of weeks. For my money I probably would have gone after the Deathheads squadron patch just because its too cool. The rest of the Top-5 is pretty diverse - everything from a plastic Polish badge to a ridiculously large mixed lot.

I don't think I've ever seen a single WWII patch go on eBay as high as the 501st Airborne patch did last week on eBay. When you consider that an it beat out several other nice pieces in this top-5 list you know its strong. How strong? Click to see the final price but let's just say it was north of $2k! I had the patch blanket as the featured item in last week's Hot Finds email and was glad to see it eclipsed the thousand dollar mark in heavy bidding. It will be a real treasure for the collector who brought it home. The "Devil's Brigade" patch didn't do too shabby either considering it was missing the pins that would have been affixed to the patch.

The last week of 2009 saw some pretty good patches & insignia selling in the WWII category of eBay. The best of the group was the German Collection featured below. The bidding for this grew very serious in the last 45 minutes of the auction. During that span of time 4 different bidders placed bids that drove the bidding up another $1,000+. In the end it was a silent sniper that came in with a knock-out punch with 5 seconds to go that won the day. Click the links to see how these other listings did.
