If you read the headlines you'll know that pundits are calling for a slow recovery from the current economic slump during 2010. For those of you who are die hard collectors you might be curious to know if there was a genuine recession in the hobby as well. Well in this post I am going to show you some graphs that might just answer that question. I invite you to use the comment box below to share what your opinions are regarding this data. Each blip on the 1 year and 2 year charts represent a week (7 days).

If you look in the German subcategory of WWII on eBay you will find that "Personal, Field Gear" is the 2nd most popular area to list items next to photographs. Some of these items can be very intriguing so I decided to search and find what were the top selling items in that niche.

Although it might not always seem like it the trend across time in the WWII category is pretty steady. To illustrate my point I've inserted a couple of graphs that show both the average number of sold items and the sales totals for the last year or so. What you can see is that there are just a few general trends. Sales in the category tended to dip around Christmas as collectors focused on buying things for others instead of filling their own wish lists. You can also see that during the summer months there is a bit of a lag which generally recovered in the fall. I'm sure the state of economy has something to do with these numbers as well.
The other graphs represent a 30-day snapshot of what the category did recently. The interesting spikes in the graph illustrate the fact that there is one particular day each week that seems to be the peak of auctions ending in the category. Anybody want to guess what day that is?
