The Top 5 listings from last week in the WWII Germany category of eBay sold in a pretty tight range. The top auction here and the #5 auction are only separated by $1,000. That similarity in sales price was the result of very different bidder action. The #1 paratrooper helmet, #2 gun scope and #5 album were all competitive auctions that had very reasonable or even cheap minimum bids. The #3 listing sold as a best offer for $2125 which was a $375 discount from the asking price. The concentration camp shoes sold as a buy-it-now for the asking price of $1850. Every once in awhile I like to just do a flat out Top-5 post to show collectors where the big boys were spending their money. Last week these listings were sitting on top thanks to some unlikely action. For example the seller of this weeks' top item - the Soviet medal - was willing to discount the price by $1250 using the best offer feature to ring up a sale. Considering that it still sold for more than $5k don't feel to bad for him. Another Russian item on the list at #4 the dagger was likewise sold using best offer. This time the seller took an offer that was discounted a full $1500 to close the deal. As for the other listings in this blog post I say they are unlikely because all of them started bidding at $1 or less. I figure that they might have had a reserve but still starting the bidding at $1 is the way to get that eBay magic working for you. Click on the links to see how these great pieces ended up.

Only one of these listings was what could call a classic auction. The auction for the Paratrooper airborne helmet started out at $50 minimum bid and after twenty bids sold for more than $1k. Three of these top 5 listings sold as buy-it-now items. The #1 fighting knife and #5 paratrooper helmet sold for about 20% less than the original asking price thanks to the best offer option.

Last week on eBay the top five auctions in the USA subcategory included three blades which strikes me as a bit unusual. However, the fact that two flight jackets also made the list doesn't seem out of place at all. The #1 auction started off at just $9.99 but after 22 bids closed at $2700. A very close 2nd place was the Marine bowie knife that started at $100 and nearly crossed the finish line ahead of the A2 jacket. The exception to all this great bidding in the auction format was the V-42 Stiletto which came out with a very high minimum bid and got that bid to sell for over two grand. Not a bad top 5 considering that every item sold for more than 2k.
