See this exchange between the eBay seller of the Italian paratrooper helmet below and a potential vulture who wanted to get her to shut down the auction. Oh by the way she didn't and it sold for an amazing $15,100!!!
Q: hallo, have you buy it now price for this helmet? thanks, enrico
A: Hello Enrico, I am so sorry but I will let it go all the way through the auction. But thank you so much for your interest. Ivey
Now read what this other potential buyer had to say about people like Enrico:
Q: Hello... this helmet might be very rare... and worth thousands. please let the auction run... and don't let some scumbag dealer ask you to end early with a low ball offer. nobody will offer you more than an item is worth to end early. this looks a lot like Mussollini's helmet??
A: Yes, the auction will run and I have had some very good offers. Someone else has suggested that it may be related to Mussolini. Thank you, Ivey
All of the items in this post were sold in the German subcategory of WWII on eBay. Not all share the pedigree that the #1 item does (which by the way was in my Hot Finds email!) but they are very nice regardless. For example, the #2 item was a a flawless Zeiss binocular that went for over $9k.

You wouldn't think that a helmet could beat the Luftwaffe but when checking on sold auctions from eBay the results are in. The top 3 selling items were all vintage helmets with the #1 issue selling for upwards of $3k.

I've seen plenty of insurance bids on auctions but its pretty weak when you make that bid be only $1 stronger than your current high bid. In the auction for the German paratrooper helmet that is what the bidding history revealed. Going into the last few minutes the high bidder "padded his bid" by a total of $7 with four insurance bids. However, if he was trying to hold off the snipers it didn't work. A pair of snipes came in during the final seconds and the one for $1332 carried the day. I mention that because the other three items in this list started off with a really high minimum bid and only got the one bid that counts.

Its been a long while since I've seen an auction go from $9.99 to over $3k with just five bids! But that type of acceleration is just what happened with this weeks #1 selling item in the German subcategory of WWII. The M-42 helmet saw a similar skyrocketing price when it went from a starting bid of $25 to sell for over $2700. This Top-5 list also features a pair of really interesting knives and a pair of binoculars that did really well. Part of the story there is that the auction included lots of other accessories that made it more attractive for the bidders. The interesting piece of disparity between the top selling blades is that one only received a single bid while the other saw some great old action ringing in 49 bids.

I grew up watching Hogan's Heroes and I'm sure many others have watched the reruns countless times. The commander of Stalag 13 Colonel Klink has his most treasured possession: a World War I spiked Pickelhaube helmet on his office desk. So while we don't know if he was much of a collector he might appreciate these top-5 items from the German subcategory of WWII.
